How We Sell Racks
Pallet Rack for Sale Since 1939
A&A Surplus has sold warehouse racking out of Plantsville, Connecticut since 1939, and selective teardrop pallet rack is the backbone of it. We keep new uprights and thousands of new beams in the yard, so a standard order doesn’t wait 4 to 6 weeks for a mill run.
Used rack comes and goes as we buy out buildings, and we’ll quote it alongside new so you can compare. Tell us your building size, clear height, pallet size and pallet weights. We’ll quote the rack, decking, freight and installation together.

The Basics
How Selective Teardrop Pallet Rack Works
Selective pallet rack is two upright frames joined by pairs of beams. Pallets sit on the beams, a forklift reaches every pallet from the aisle, and you can move beam levels up or down in 2″ steps as your loads change.
Teardrop is the most common style in North America. The uprights have teardrop-shaped slots, and the beams lock in with connector clips and a safety pin, with no bolts needed. Many brands use the teardrop pattern, but punch spacing varies, so send us a photo of your upright before you mix brands.
Parts of a Pallet Rack System
-
Upright Frames
Two columns tied together with bracing. Height sets how many levels you get; depth matches your pallet.
-
Beams
Horizontal pairs that carry the load. Length sets how many pallets fit per level; face height sets capacity.
-
Wire Decking
Sits on the beams to catch overhang and support loads that aren’t on a standard pallet.
-
Anchors and Protection
Floor anchors, column protectors, row spacers and end-of-aisle guards keep the rack plumb and forklift damage down.
Planning Guide
How to Plan a Pallet Rack Layout
Four measurements decide most rack jobs. Get these and we can quote the system.
Clear Height
Measure from the floor to the lowest obstruction: sprinkler heads, lights or roof steel. Your top pallet plus its load has to clear it, and your fire code sets how close you can get to sprinklers.
Frame Depth
The standard frame for a 40″ x 48″ pallet is 42″ deep, so the pallet hangs about 3″ over each beam. Deeper or shallower loads need a different frame depth.
Beam Length
A 96″ beam holds two standard pallets per level, and a 144″ beam holds three. Longer beams need a bigger face to carry the same weight.
Starter and Add-On Bays
A starter bay has two frames. Each add-on bay shares a frame with the bay beside it, so a long row costs less per bay than standalone units. Tell us how many bays you need and we’ll count the frames.

FAQ
Pallet Rack FAQs: Sizes, Capacity, New vs. Used
What sizes of pallet rack do you stock?
New teardrop uprights from 6′ to 20′ tall in depths from 18″ to 60″, and new teardrop beams from 48″ to 144″ long with faces from 3″ to 6.25″. Used uprights and beams come in other sizes as we buy them, so call 1-800-826-5326 for this week’s stock.
Will your beams fit my existing pallet rack?
Often, yes. Many brands use the teardrop pattern, but punch spacing and connector styles vary from one maker to the next. Send us a photo of your upright and the end of a beam, and we’ll check the fit before you order.
How much weight can a pallet rack level hold?
It depends on the beam length, the beam face height and the upright frame. For example, our 96″ x 4″ beam is rated at 5,000 lb and the 96″ x 3″ beam at 2,300 lb. Tell us your pallet weights and how many pallets go on each level, and we’ll match the beams and frames to the load.
What's the difference between a starter bay and an add-on bay?
A starter bay is a complete unit with two upright frames. An add-on bay uses one new frame and shares the other with the bay next to it, so each bay after the first costs less. Long rows are a starter plus add-ons.
Should I buy new or used pallet rack?
Used rack costs less and works well when the frames are straight and the beams match. New rack makes sense for a specific size, a large matched order or a firm delivery date. We can quote both or mix new beams with used uprights. See our used pallet rack page for current used stock.
Is used pallet rack as strong as new?
Yes, as long as there’s no structural damage. Used rack keeps its rated capacity when the frames are straight and the beams and connectors aren’t bent or cracked. Cosmetic wear doesn’t change the rating. We check used rack before it leaves the yard.
Do you install pallet rack?
Yes. Our crew installs pallet rack in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and New Jersey, including anchoring to the floor and setting beam levels. We can also take down your old rack. See our services page for more.
Do I need wire decking?
Not always, but most warehouses add it. Wire decking catches pallet overhang and supports loads that don’t sit squarely on the beams. See our wire decking page for sizes.
Do you buy used pallet rack?
Yes. If you’re closing, moving or clearing out a building, we buy used pallet rack and other material handling equipment and handle the removal. Call 1-800-826-5326.
