Used Gravity Conveyor, Stocked and Ready
A&A Surplus has sold warehouse equipment out of Plantsville, Connecticut since 1939. Gravity roller conveyor is one of the simplest things we stock and one of the most useful. It moves boxes, totes and cases across a building with no motors and no power.
We keep 18″ and 24″ roller conveyor on hand, along with the stands to set it up. Used conveyor costs a fraction of new, and because a roller line has so few parts, a good used section does the same work. Tell us your box sizes, how far product needs to travel and the working height you want. We’ll tell you what we have that fits.

The Basics
What Is Gravity Roller Conveyor?
Gravity roller conveyor is a line of free-turning steel rollers set between two side frames. Pitch the line downhill and boxes, totes and cartons roll on their own. Keep it level and your crew pushes product along with almost no effort. There are no motors, no wiring and nothing to maintain beyond the occasional stuck roller.
It’s the cheapest way to stop people from carrying boxes across a building, and it’s usually the first conveyor a warehouse buys.
Why Warehouses Use It
-
No power needed
Set it on stands and it works. Nothing to plug in, nothing to program.
-
Low cost to buy and run
Used gravity conveyor costs less than powered conveyor, and there’s no electric bill or motor to replace.
-
Easy to move
Sections bolt together, come apart and move to a new spot in an afternoon.
-
Less lifting
Your crew slides product instead of carrying it, which cuts strain and speeds up packing and shipping.
-
Works with what you have
Gravity sections can feed powered conveyor, packing tables and loading docks.
Applications
Where Gravity Conveyor Earns Its Keep
Packing and Shipping
Set a line at table height and packers slide finished boxes down to the shipping area. No carts, no walking back and forth.
Order Picking
Pickers push totes along a pick line beside shelving or carton flow rack. Totes stay at waist height the whole way.
Truck Loading
Run conveyor from the dock into the trailer and boxes roll straight to the loader. Flex conveyor helps when trailer position changes.
Assembly Lines
Parts and work in progress move from station to station at a steady height. Add or pull a section when the line changes.
Accumulation
A slight downhill pitch lets product collect at the end of the line until someone is ready for it.
Returns and Receiving
Cartons come off the truck onto conveyor and roll to the sorting area, so nothing piles up at the door.
Compare
Roller vs. Skatewheel vs. Flex Conveyor
Most warehouses end up with more than one type. Roller conveyor is the workhorse for fixed lines that carry mixed loads. Skatewheel is lighter and spins more freely, so light cartons start rolling on a gentler pitch. Flex conveyor is the one you pull out when a truck shows up and push back against the wall when it leaves. Not sure which one your product needs? Send us the box dimensions and weight.
| Gravity Roller | Skatewheel | Expandable Flex | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Fixed lines with mixed loads | Light cartons, long runs | Truck loading, temporary lines |
| Load | Medium to heavy | Light | Light to medium |
| Product bottoms | Handles soft or uneven bottoms | Needs flat, firm bottoms | Firm bottoms work best |
| Curves | Needs curve sections | Curves easily | Bends to shape |
| Portability | Stays put | Light to carry | Rolls on casters, folds for storage |
Sizing Guide
How to Size Gravity Conveyor
Four measurements decide whether a line works. Get these right before you order.
Width
Measure your widest box and add a couple of inches. An 18″ conveyor handles most cartons. Go to 24″ for wide cases, totes and mixed loads.
Roller Centers
Keep at least three rollers under every item at all times. On 3″ centers that covers items about 9″ long and up. On 4.5″ centers, plan on 14″ and up.
Slope
For product to roll on its own, most lines need a drop of about 1/4″ to 1/2″ per foot. Heavy, firm boxes roll on less. Soft or light items need more. Test with your own product first.
Stand Spacing
Support each 10′ section at both ends. Stands are height adjustable, so you can set the pitch after the line is in place.
Why A&A
Why Buy Used From A&A Surplus
Gravity conveyor is about as simple as material handling equipment gets: steel frames, steel rollers and bearings. When a used section rolls freely and the frame is straight, it does the same job as a new one. That’s why used makes more sense here than almost anywhere else in a warehouse.
We’ve been in business since 1939 and carry a BBB A+ rating. We check used conveyor before it leaves the yard, and we’ll tell you straight if a section isn’t right for your load. Replacing an old line or clearing a building? We buy used material handling equipment too, so one call can cover both sides.

FAQ
Gravity Conveyor Common Questions
What is gravity roller conveyor used for?
It moves boxes, totes, cases and parts without power. Common uses are packing stations, pick lines, truck loading and moving work between assembly stations.
What's the difference between gravity roller and skatewheel conveyor?
Roller conveyor handles heavier loads and soft or uneven bottoms better because each roller supports the full width of the item. Skatewheel conveyor is lighter and easier to move, and it handles light cartons and curves well. For mixed warehouse loads, roller conveyor is the safer choice.
How much pitch does gravity conveyor need?
Most lines need about 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of drop per foot for product to roll on its own. Heavy, firm boxes need less. Light or soft items need more. Test with your own product before you set the final height.
How much weight can gravity roller conveyor carry?
It depends on roller size, frame and how far apart the stands are. Our 24 inch sections use heavy-duty 1.9 inch rollers. Give us the weight of your heaviest item and we’ll confirm the section will carry it.
Can I add used conveyor to the line I already have?
Usually, yes. Match the width, roller diameter and frame height and the sections will line up. Send us those three measurements and we’ll check what we have.
Do conveyor stands come with hardware?
No. Stands are sold without hardware. Call and we’ll tell you what you need for your sections.
